Overcoming the Fear of Tech – Tips for Genealogists

As genealogists, we’re no strangers to the thrill of discovering something new—whether it’s finding an ancestor’s record or piecing together a family tree. But let’s face it, learning new technology can sometimes feel intimidating. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be! Here are a few ways I’ve learned to embrace technology and overcome that initial fear.

1. Start Small, Go Step-by-Step
Remember how you approach a new archive? You take the time to learn its layout, procedures, and forms, but the goal is clear: search, request, copy. Technology works the same way. Start with one tool and focus on the basics. For example, learn how to open files or save your work—things you’re already familiar with. Once you feel comfortable with those, move on to new features. Little by little, you’ll build confidence.

2. Embrace a Growth Mindset
Think of tech as a journey, not something you need to master in a single day. You’re constantly improving! Celebrate every small victory—whether it’s understanding a new feature or solving a tech issue. Remember, you’re not expected to know it all right away, just to keep learning.

3. Connect it to What You Love
Tech feels less scary when you see how it enhances your passion. Whether it’s using a new database, building family trees in software, or leveraging AI for translation, remind yourself that each new tool helps uncover more about your ancestors. That’s worth the effort!

4. Get Support from a Community
You don’t have to go it alone! There are YouTube tutorials, Facebook groups, and local genealogy societies filled with people who’ve faced the same challenges. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, share your progress, and celebrate your wins with others who understand.

5. Experiment Without Pressure
One thing I always tell people: “You’re not going to blow anything up.” Don’t be afraid to test out new tools and explore without pressure. Mistakes are part of learning. In fact, some of my best tech breakthroughs came from trial and error! Take your time—there’s no rush.

Learning technology is like solving a genealogical puzzle—there may be challenges, but the reward is so satisfying when it all comes together. How do you stay motivated when learning new tech? I’d love to hear your tips!
